Physician NonClinical Careers with John Jurica

Feb 4, 2020

On this week’s episode of the PNC podcast, Paul Esselman returns to the show to discuss physician executive roles in health care.

Paul is the president and managing director of Cejka Search, a healthcare executive search firm that focuses on leadership positions in hospitals and health systems. Paul was our guest in Episode 041 published in late 2018.

In this interview, he describes the growing demand for physician leaders on senior hospital executive teams. He explains that the spectrum of leadership roles for physicians has expanded beyond the traditional Chief Medical Officer and Medical Director roles.

Now, physician leaders must have an understanding of social determinants of health and how to integrate health care for patients across different parts of the health care continuum.

Paul describes new positions in high demand, including Chief Integration Officer and Chief Transformation Officer, and the expectations for physicians entering these roles. And we discuss the education and workplace experiences that will prepare physician leaders for these positions.
