Physician NonClinical Careers with John Jurica

May 11, 2020

In today's episode, John discusses home based careers. There are three main benefits to choosing a home based career:

1. Convenience

When you work from home, you’re able to manage household responsibilities. Also, navigating childcare or adult caretaking may require you to consider home based careers.

2. Cost Savings

Eliminating your commute means you’ll save time, reduce gasoline and automobile maintenance costs, and save tens of thousands of dollars.

3. Flexibility

Home-based careers offer more flexibility. Though some may require a 9-to-5 workday, most will allow you to choose your hours, including nights, weekends or holidays, if that works for you.

Popular Home-based Careers

Here are factors to consider when seeking one of the following popular home-based careers:

  • Chart Review: Performing chart reviews can be done for utilization management, disability and worker’s compensation assessments, expert witness consulting, clinical documentation, and quality improvement.
  • Medical writing: As a freelancer, you must set up your own business, and find work inititally. But once you develop relationships with several editors, you should be able to generate regular income, working from anywhere in the world, on your schedule.
  • Telemedicine: This is an especially flexible career. You must ensure that you are working with a reputable company. You can start by supplementing your income by moonlighting. You need to take steps to reduce your liability. Working at high-demand times, often on weekends and holidays, can boost your income significantly.
  • Consulting: If you're a consultant working from home, you will likely be freelancing, rather than working for a large consulting firm. You may have to do some traveling and speaking events to build your authority and market your business. But once you get established, most of your business can be done from home.
  • Coaching: Coaching is another type of consulting. It can be face-to-face, but most is done remotely. You should pick a field based on your personal expertise, and certification is an option.
