Physician NonClinical Careers with John Jurica

Oct 22, 2019

On this week's episode of the podcast, John interviews Dr. Jawad Arshad, an emergency physician looking to bring much-needed transparency to the healthcare marketplace. He and his partners also intend to disrupt the health insurance industry by removing insurers from the physician-patient interaction.

Dr. Arshad is an emergency medicine physician. He completed his medical training at SUNY Upstate Medical Center and his emergency medicine residency at Henry Ford Hospital.

After entering clinical work in emergency medicine, he quickly became involved in management, first as an employee, then in his own urgent care business. He pivoted again when he embarked on his first start-up, a technology company in the telemedicine field.

He stepped away from that venture, and applied what he learned about start-ups to a project that has consumed him for the past three years, WoW Health Solutions. This company uses a technology-based platform where physicians can list their services and prices, and patients can comparison shop and schedule their appointments.

By eliminating large billing departments and expensive billing systems, physicians can offer service at lower prices, while keeping more profits. Patients can identify costs and select services with the best combination of access and price for their needs, without being charged high premiums and extra copays.

Jawad takes us through his journey, and describes what it's like to work with business partners and investors when engaged in a healthcare tech start-up. He also explains how his company limits the need for third party payers in the healthcare marketplace.
